Welcome To Icy Phoenix

  • What is Icy Phoenix?
  • Icy Phoenix is a CMS based on phpBB (a fully scalable and highly customisable open-source Bulletin Board package PHP based) plus many modifications and code integrations which add flexibility to the whole package. The official home page for phpBB is www.phpbb.com. Icy Phoenix has some features originally developed for phpBB XS Project which has been founded by Bicet and then developed by both Bicet and Mighty Gorgon. Icy Phoenix has been created by Luca Libralato after he left the phpBB XS Project.

  • What are the main features of Icy Phoenix?
  • Icy Phoenix has many features, most of them are listed in the Features Page and in the Credits Page. The main ones are:
    • phpBB bulletin board and permission system
    • CMS features allowing the creation of new pages and blocks
    • Overall template integration among all site sections
    • Many ready to use features: Photo Gallery, Downloads, Knowledge Base, Links, Chat...
    • Multi-language and multi-template ready
    • Almost 100% XHTML and CSS W3C compliant
    • ...and many others...

  • Is Icy Phoenix supported for bugs, security issues, improvements?
  • Icy Phoenix is an open source project. As like many open source projects it is developed by people using their free time. At the moment there are several persons in the staff willing to help and to contribute to this project. We hope the community will continue to grow and be able to provide all the necessary support to all the users who may need help.

  • Is Icy Phoenix easy to install and upgrade from other platforms?
  • Icy Phoenix has its own setup procedure which guides the user through the steps of the setup process. An upgrading file is provided to upgrade the package from standard phpBB and phpBB XS. Hopefully an upgrade procedure from any other platform will be written in the future: at the moment the only way to upgrade from another platform is by downgrading to phpBB and then run the provided upgrade procedure.

  • Does Icy Phoenix have many templates?
  • Yes, at the moment there are some free templates (some of them with multicolour variations) and we are working to create new ones. If you are interested in new templates you should regularly check the support forum and Styles Section.

  • Is Icy Phoenix multi-language?
  • English is the main language of Icy Phoenix, but it has been translated into other languages (alphabetical order): Arabic, Catalan, Dutch, German, Italian, Spanish... and more to come! If you don't find your language listed here, please ask at the support forum, maybe someone else is working on the translation you need and you would be welcome to join the translation team to give your contribution.

  • Will Icy Phoenix be upgraded to phpBB 3?
  • The matter is quite complex. Even if the starting core was phpBB 2, many phpBB 3 features and core functions have been ported to Icy Phoenix: this means that currently Icy Phoenix is based on a version of phpBB which is an hybrid between phpBB 2 and phpBB 3. The code is highly optimized, it uses cache extensively, you shouldn't miss phpBB 3.

  • May I join the Icy Phoenix Project?
  • Of course. Icy Phoenix is an open source project, and anyone who is willing to give his own contribution on a stable basis may then apply to join the Team.

Before trying to install Icy Phoenix make sure you have the following STRICTLY NEEDED requirements:
  • At least 20 MB of free space in the folder you would like to install the package.
  • Web server with PHP (5 or higher) installed and running (works best on Linux + Apache).
  • MySQL (5 or higher) database with at least 5MB of free space (of course the space needed depends on how big your site will be... 5MB is enough for a basic empty setup).
  • Ability to set CHMOD permissions.

These other requirements (even if not strictly needed) are suggested for optimal performance of Icy Phoenix:
  • Hosting Services with .htaccess capability.
  • Apache Rewrite Mod installed and running.
  • GD Libraries (at least 2.0.28) installed and running.
  • Register Globals set to OFF.

Mighty Gorgon Leaves XS Project

Mighty Gorgon Leaves XS Project Posted  Mon 11 Sep, 2006 08:57 By Mighty Gorgon
Announcement
Hi all.

After spending more than one year on this project, I think that my time on it is over, and I'm really sorry to announce that I'm leaving XS project.

I've worked hard for this project, and I'm really happy to see that the community has grown so much in the last year.

The reason because I leave this project is simple: personal divergencies with Bicet.

I will not go into further details explaining this.

I don't know what Bicet will decide to do with phpBB XS, but I want to thank him for giving me the opportunity to work on it, and to learn so many things about php and phpBB world. Since phpBB XS currently doesn't have a home, I've decided to continue supporting it until Bicet will decide something about XS or until a new Official XS Support site will open. So...

This site is not any more the Official Support site for phpBB XS, but will continue support it until the project will be close, moved or whatever Bicet will decide.

Now, talking about the future, I will launch another phpBB project soon... I still don't know the name of the new project, and I don't know who will be part of the new Staff... but I can say that most of the features and guidelines I've adopted in phpBB XS will be ported on it... even if I hope to be able to manage things in a different way... hopefully more efficient and organized respect of what I did in the past.

When I have some further details, I will let you know... I still have to think to several things, write down the new guidelines, recruit the Staff, design the new package... and so on... Please, do not ask me for support via PM, because now I'm really busy with this new project setup. If you need help, I hope that the Staff will find the time to help you, and when I have some spare time, I'll obviously come to support XS either.

Regards,
Luca Libralato

phpBB XS Build 058

phpBB XS Build 058 Posted  Fri 18 Aug, 2006 16:13 By Mighty Gorgon
phpBB XS
Hi all,
here is the latest release of phpBB XS: Build 058 (F'N'F).

This release may be considered as a consolidation release: only few new features have been added, most of the work have been focused on fixing bugs and templates issues. Quite all the new changes in this release may be found in the CHANGELOG, even if the list is not complete. This is the first release in which Bicet didn't code anything, because he is really busy and under pressure ... but of course the "spirit" of Bicet is everywhere in XS and I hope he will manage to solve his problems and will be able to come back soon coding and supporting this wonderful project that he started more than one year ago. I speak with Bicet regularly, at least twice a week... he is fine and he is terrible sorry for all xs.com problems and for being absent during this period. This release is obviously a tribute to him, for all the hard work he did in the past for XS and for all that he will be able to do in the future for this great project. I have to thank him for having involved me in this project... and for being a great friend too. Bicet, we all hope to see you back soon.

Even if Bicet was not present during the development of this release, I have been helped from all Staff members in testing and implementing things. A big thanks to all the Staff members who have demonstrated to be really serious persons... especially I would like to thank ThE KuKa and Tom for being great contributors to this project, and for helping me in the administration of this site. You can find all the main contributors to this project at the bottom of this post... or using the XS BBCode tag.

Of course I've forgotten to thank someone... please, take no offence if your name is not here... I've been really busy in these days stress testing XS for being sure to have a quite stable release.

It's the first time I'm providing even a file changes (from Build 049) for updating this release... I've decided to release a file changes because many of you asked for it... but as you will notice almost all core files have been changed, so there is no big benefit... anyway, now you have it, and you can choose the best installation method that will suit your needs.

Another little message before leaving you to this release: tomorrow I will leave for my vacations... I'll be off until next sunday (27th)... so please... if you have any kind of problem you can refer to all the Staff members.

USUAL DISCLAIMER
We won't ever provide CODE CHANGES for phpBB XS, mainly for three reasons:
  • phpBB XS is still under development, and CODE CHANGES could be hundreds of lines of code... so, writing a full CODE CHANGES is time consuming.
  • phpBB XS is heavily premodded, so installing new mods may be really tough if you're not confident with PHP and phpBB systems.
  • Because of the two previous, installing a complex CODE CHANGES could be more dangerous than install again some little modifications you may have applied.

I'm sure that the easy way for you is replacing all XS files with the new ones, and eventually reapply some mods you have installed on previous XS version.

I hope you can understand our point of view... acting in this way, we will keep XS very flexible: writing big CODE CHANGES delays release, and most important can sometime retain us to apply some modifications (because of the complexity of writing some CODE CHANGES).

WE WON'T EVER PROVIDE CODE CHANGES FOR ANY XS VERSION.

Upgrading your current XS is really easy... you can follow standard instructions:
Spoiler: [ Show ]

We will try to do our best to help you in the upgrading process if you encounter any kind of problems.

Please, use appropriate forums for asking support.

Enjoy XS!
