Old Styles Topics - Underline And Overline

Post subject: Underline And Overline
I have Macintosh...

The problem is the text decoration of the Menu items: Main links, News, Info, User&Groups, RSS.

In Safari they are overlined.

In Camino they are simply underlined.

I'd like to use the second one view for all browsers... what have I to do?

I don't know what you mean saying "on this page"...

Also on www.icyphoenix.com I see the menu bar overlined... with Safari...

I don't know why... but I thought it was something about style configuration...

I think underline is probably slightly misspelled in that theme's style sheet and most browsers recognise the mistake and correct it but Safari thinks overline is correct.

I think you should use a Windows PC.

I'm kidding of course.

Unfortunately I cannot test your problem because I don't have a Mac and Safari. I hope that someone having this config may help us in fixing the CSS.

Currently I have removed the underlining.

I try to give look to the .css but I'm starting with php and I can't do anything... first I thoght it was enough to change the text decoration of the dynamic menu from overline to underline... but then I saw that with another browser (like Camino) all works well...
I'll upgrade to final release.. so... that's all!

you are talking about the final release, isn't it?

OT. Mio caro Luca non so perchè pensavo avessi Macintosh... forse perchè ti considero una mente "elevata"...
Colgo l'occasione per ringraziarti nuovamente (come ho fatto via mail) per il tuo lavoro... ti ammiro molto... Complimenti!

Yes I've removed the decoration in the final release, because it wasn't really needed there. But it's not the way to solve problems and we should understand why it is not working fine.

Grazie per gli apprezzamenti. Uso Windows da sempre, ed onestamente mi sono sempre trovato bene... sia per lavoro che per passione purtroppo Win ha delle cose a cui non posso rinunciare...

Switch to Windows and FireFox...

I don't know why it is happening, maybe the vertical-alignement... anyway I'll remove the decoration in Aprhodite as well next time I'll open CSS...

I don't know what's happened Mighty... the menu comes back overlined... this only on my web-site... on IcyPhoenix, both .com and .it, it appears underlined...

I'm so confused...

In the current distro of IP, the styles for Icy (style_ice.css), there is no underline for inactive/visited., but still has "text-decoration: underline" for some link attributes under the forumlink class (which nav_quick_links uses) - that is, for attributes of hover/active. Funnily enough, in Firefox on Windows, I only see a change in colour, not also underline on mouse over - so even MG's recommended tools aren't doing the job properly! (or else this site - icypoenix.com, which I'm using for comparisons, isn't updated to the latest distro).
So feelbeen, do you see the underline problem only on active menu items, or on all menu items, regardless of being open (active) or not?

The problem, from the image you posted, looks to be the way that cell pics/cell spacing combined with javascript are handled in Safari. It almost looks like the text row is below the image row, whilst the underline is in a row where the text whould be - or in otherwords, as if there are two rows superimposed, one containing text, the other containing the underline, and the two are offset. As we know from nav_links, there is only really one row that is defined, and the menu item arranged between that and the <th> tags, along with javascript show hide functions. One wonders if the javascript show/hide lines were removed, whether the cell spacing would change, and the underline appear below the text...

Indeed... on that final thought... can you disable javascript in your Safari browser? This should render all menu items exposed. It might change the way table cells are handled by the browser... and maybe underlines actually underlining

thank you for your thought... but I think that disabling javascript in Safari could involve other changes in my IP... so...

I'd like to know why after my upgrade to final release the dinamic menu was OK - strictly underlined - and after a few, it comes back to its strange overlined view...
what could I have done to have the menu changed?

Post subject: Re: Underline And Overline
You only need to disable javascript temporarily to see any effects. You can enable it afterwards after checking. It will not effect IP on your server, only the way you view it on your own personal browser. Javascript is kept to a minimum, only used on cosmetic things, like the menu open close, unread posts pop down menu, and pop-up previews in the album. Indeed MG's philosophy in IP is not to use javascript on anything fundamental, like in the ACP. So really, no problems for you to do this.

If my suspicions are right, the change you have seen in viewing may have come about after you have visited parts of the menu.

Hence aslo... do you see the underline problem only on active menu items, or on all menu items, regardless of being open (active) or not (closed) - and also what happens when you just hover rather than click over a menu item?
