Shoutbox
-----------------------------------
Hello there,
maybe I'm blind but I cannot see the shoutbox neither in home page nor in the forum index.
Is there a switch somewhere in the ACP to enable it?

thanks in advance

Ciao Magma... There are two places you need to go to to get shoutbox showing

1) The first is where it is actually enabled, under ACP >> SQL Optimisation. 2nd one up from bottom is the shoutbox settings. You enable it there, and its up to you whether you have the 2 options (most people set option 2 to no, 3 to yes).

2) The view permissions. For instance I don't want non-registered users to see it on my site. Go into ACP >> Settings >> Page Permissions, down the bottom you will find Shoutbox permissions. Set it to what you like, e.g. Reg, so that only registered users can view it, or all, so everyone can see it. Since the old versions of XS, it has now been set up that it doesn't appear to users who aren't authorised to read it (there was a bug that for non-authorised viewers, only the box would appear, with the somewhat contradictory* message: "you do not have authorisation to read this"...

*If your English is not so good, i.e. if you are American, I am poining out the fact that by virtue of reading the line "you do not have authorisation to read this", you must have authorisation to read it... ;)

And how can I do to insert a new block with the shoutbox in the home page?

P.S.: found by myself!!

Re: Shoutbox

Good question, as it hasn't been coded in as a main option, but wouldn't be hard to. There is however, a very straight forward way to add it, as a portal block.

1) Go into ACP >> IMPortal >> Blocks Management. You will see a list of portal pages. Unfortunately mine is completely customised, and i can't remeber which one is the default one in XS - "3 columns" I suspect. In fact if you want you can go through the list - it will be the only page that has any blocks listed in it.

2) After selecting the age, you should be on blocks management page. At the bottom select "add blocks".

3) Add new block page:
(i)Give the new block a title, e.g. Shoutbox.
(ii) Block position - you'd want center here.
(iii) Set it to active, no caching, then from block file drop down list, select: shoutbox.
(iv) Choose view auth level i.e. whether you want unregistered visitors to see it (think carefully about that!) - nice thing about IMPortal is you can customise each individual block, even the permissions.
(v) Then select to display title bar and border (without it, it would look strange!).
Submit!

4) All done. You should be back on the default page blocks administration page, so look for an entry for your newly created shoutbox - you can move it up and down to control where it comes out on the home page. Then go look at your home page.

I should add that it will contain the same text as the shoutbox on the forum page, because it only has a simple database table structure, i.e. nothing like the forum.

Thanks a lot, even if I already found the solution I think it's very useful you have posted it for other people!!! ;)

Ah right... I thought you meant you had found by yourself the answer to your first question - how to get the shoutbox to be viewed! But yes, a good point - always post a solution to a problem... which includes you if find the solution yourself! We are all volunteers here, and share knowledge as it accumulates... ;)
