Originally the BBS was on main frame university computers. Then when personal computers came along BBS software was developed for personal computers. One would set it up on their home computers and people could dial in through a modem (2400 bps modems or less in those days). Once the World Wide Web was generally available in the mid-1990s, software like phpBB developed. Specifically, here, I am referring to the "site name" and the "site description" found in the "Board Settings".
