Post [DEPRECATED] MODS For Icy Phoenix Beta.

These MODs are deprecated and no longer supported for IP Release Candidate Versions

They will be upgraded - But it all takes time - So just be patient.

And Please upgrade your Icy Phoenix to version 1.3.*

Its a sad day when another coder decides to stop support something, without you guys most of the rest of us would just have stare at blank screens.

Sorry to see you go but you must have your reasons, good luck.

I have completely lost my enthusiasm for supporting Icy Phoenix and the reasons are many. So I won't bother you with the details.

That is really sad.

I won't be bothered to hear the details via PM ore email if you want to.

I'll be glad to hear also how could I improve things here, if you have any feedback.

_____

Thanks for the mods for the beta.

I only disagree on one point

The exception to this is the Quick Login MOD which may have to have the <table id=" adjusted to <table class=" should MG decide that the global table id=" at present prevents the table from being halted to include <form data> and then re-started and as such it will not validate the markup because it starts two id's on the same page.

That ID is not needed to be changed... the problem is the form you are using, and it is enough to make a small modification to it to make it work correctly, me and Chaotic tested that successfully and we can post the working code if you wish.

Maybe for another day sometime in the future.

Start a Beta Forum so that all the Beta and RC threads can be kept out of the Support forums for the current stable version. And emphasise in red the limit of response that people can expect to get, then maybe people will realise what a Beta is and  stop trying to run it live.

You're welcome, as I don't destroy anything or wouldn't deprive others of what I do, just because I don't use it anymore.

So do I, but I spent enough time in and out of the config files, that I just left it as it was.

Please do, and any other Code for the Beta mods you may consider need changing - Then by the time IP is released as stable, There won't be any problems and you could add them to the Download Database rather that have them floating as a thread.

PS: I hope you like the KISS system - Not necessary - But should help to prevent most if not all installations errors.

Well, me and you have a very different approach.

I believe that what is an user issue SHOULD not be transformed in extra job for me, and extra time drained away from this project.

It is clearly stated this:

Support

Regarding the support for beta, I'll quote phpBB beta release statement:
Acyd Burn wrote:
During the beta phase a minimal level of support will be given. We will provide answers to general setup questions, configuration problems and support for determining common problems mostly related to bugs. We will not support modifications, custom code/style additions or any users using the beta packages within a live environment.

For some support questions or bug reports we may ask you to re-install the beta, clean tables in the database, purge data or other actions which are not advised to do in a live environment. So please be aware that you are still on your own if you run the beta in such an environment.

Beginning with the release candidates full support will be given.

But as you know users don't like reading such kind of things... and even if I write it in RED on top of each forum, or I ban everyone is asking support for the beta, would not prevent new users to ask. What is the benefit of it then?

We need a trade-off and during my several year in supporting communities and project I just realized that the Staff (unless you have a really "wide based" Staff with 24/7 coverage) should put the minimum efforts towards these kind of users.

You cannot change some users attitude... there is no way. That is my believe... so if they don't read announcements and few basic rules, you cannot expect they are willing to read something extra. Let them ask... and let me don't answer. This is my "motto".

Again regarding extra subforums... creating extra places dedicated to the beta could lead some people to think in this way: "If there is a special place for the beta, then I'm allowed to ask there...".

Well... the answer is no.

I'll let anyone write here in the general support forum, hoping that a good subject is posted... if users are willing to write good subjects, it is more likely that I will read the post and maybe give them support... otherwise I won't ban them or ask them to rewrite their topics. I don't have to waste my time with such kind of things... and the Staff as well.

Banning, or answer "read the rule" or "use search" is a time waste as well. And time is a precious resource which is becoming even more precious because we are lacking of Staff members here.

The fact that I'm using my time for this answer now [consider that English is not my language, and writing these kind of posts (where it is necessary not being misunderstood) requires a lot of time for me] demonstrates that I do care for users like you which are giving something back to the community... you are giving back for free, as you have received for free. This is the only way I can thank you for your contribution to this project.

I hope you now understand a little more on my way of managing this project. I do not pretend you to agree on my point... I just wanted you to know that my way to act is based upon past experience and so many time given away for free. Yes, I also received some money contributions, and I thanks everyone for those, but I can assure that I'm just covering the expenses of this project with those money... no extra gain.

I still really trust open source.

As I suggested Chaotic, this is the way to add a quick login bar (please note that I just used hardcoded lang vars... it is only a test!):

OPEN: overall_inc_body.tpl

FIND:

Code: [Download] [Hide] [Select]
    <!-- IF SWITCH_CMS_GLOBAL_BLOCKS -->
    <div style="vertical-align:top;"><!-- BEGIN header_blocks_row -->{header_blocks_row.CMS_BLOCK}<!-- END header_blocks_row --></div>
    <table class="empty-table" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0">
    <tr>

ABOVE, ADD:

Code: [Download] [Hide] [Select]
<!-- IF not S_LOGGED_IN --><form method="post" action="login_ip.php"><span class="genmed">&nbsp;<strong>Quick Log in:</strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;</span><span class="gensmall"><strong>Username:&nbsp;</strong><input class="post" type="text" name="username" size="10" />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Password:&nbsp;</strong><input class="post" type="password" name="password" size="10" maxlength="32" />&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<input class="text" type="checkbox" name="autologin" />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<input type="submit" class="mainoption" name="login" value=" Log in " /></span></form><!-- ENDIF -->

Not Really.

My concept behind a forum for Beta questions was that there would be a stock answer to every question that was not related to Beta-Testing as most of us understand what Beta-Testing is all about.

And that would be something like:

Icy Phoenix releases Beta software for the benefit of those skilled in Icy Phoenix Code, php and / or html. It is not intended to be used for any other purpose other than for testing, fault-finding, reporting problems or making recommendations to code or script changes.

Beta-Testing gives you the opportunity to work with unstable code and contribute to a better final product. And it is not recommended that you use this Beta-Release in any "Live" forum environment.

It wouldn't take too many answers like that in a Beta-Forum for people to understand that questions like "How Do I / Can't do this" are irrelevant.

Post Re: [Release] MODS For Icy Phoenix Beta.

I've looked at this and the location you suggest to "validate it" IMHO looks awful.

If need be the mod can be re-written to include another <table id and the markup anchor possibly placed in the common.css. Then it could be included anywhere where it suits the layout of whatever theme uses it.

MG, unless I'm missing something, I've never seen <table id's before and always believed that this was something reserved for divs and javascript. So what is the purpose of using this particular format with IP themes, when <table class would make no difference other than to remove the problem of adding the mod anywhere within that table, and be validated without having to add extra table Id's?

And the same could be said for any other mods that may want to be added within the table in future - The <table Id is always going to be a problem.

Post To One And All

To one and all,

I will re-check these mods for the final FULL release of the next version of Icy Phoenix, as I do know some things do have be changed in some of them.

In the meantime, I will not give any support to anyone using these mods with the RC releases of Icy Phoenix.
