You mean an AJaX call each X seconsd / minutes to check if a private messages have been received ?

Maybe each minute.
My point is that you can open many tabs => each will do a request and the PM popup will show on each tab. Second is that I don't spend a lot of time directly on the board, I just came each 3/4hours.
Else, you just have to make an action on privmsg.php, in example "check_messages" which give last message and re-query a check "message_time > $_SESSION['last_mp_time'] && user_id == $user->data['id']", then a little popup / modal dialog.
If you have an idea for the "many tabs have same info box" problem, I can try to look and do something (and maybe integrate it later in IP code).
