but i keep getting a sql error. i am using the recent topic list from the site i found from a user juggalo_master.

it works but doesn't show the text from the thread and i can't seem to figure out how to get it to show up

Did you think about using RSS feed? Most of software manage RSS feeds, and you can use your Icy Phoenix RSS feed to feed the block in the blog (forgive the repetition of the words!).
