Site Slow (updated)
Hi All,
help time again....
site is hdoz.org.au,
still running V1.3.0.53b (it aint broke so don't need fixing)
Have 400+ registered users but most on line ever was 111 and typically its probably 30ish
Site has slowed up dramatically in last week.. and host is telling me I am at 300% of CPU allocation.. and have been forever, I get weekly emails to say I'm over but it never said by 300%????? so what changed in the last week to cause this????
it is being suggested that there is commonly script in phpBB that expressly causes this
MOD Title: Remove Navigation Links
## MOD Author: drathbun < N/A > (Dave Rathbun) http://www.phpBBDoctor.com
## MOD Description: This simple MOD removes the navigation links from your board which can result in a lower server load from your board
## MOD Version: 1.0.1
##
##
## Installation Level: Easy
## Installation Time: ~ 5 Minutes
## Files To Edit: (6) common.php
## viewforum.php
## viewtopic.php
## includes/functions.php
## includes/page_header.php
## templates/subSilver/overall_header.tpl
## Included Files: None
is this a path I should be heading down, or is this already handled.
As always any suggestions would be appreciated

Re: Site Slow
Hi Zag,
I;ve visited a few pages of your site as a guest ..to see what you mean and I must say I don't realy understand what you mean.
I used IE9 and these are my results:
Quote: Generation Time: 0.9645s (PHP: 51% SQL: 49%)
SQL queries: 13 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled
Generation Time: 0.4208s (PHP: 35% SQL: 65%)
SQL queries: 13 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled
Generation Time: 1.0187s (PHP: 35% SQL: 65%)
SQL queries: 12 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled
Generation Time: 0.4834s (PHP: 80% SQL: 20%)
SQL queries: 16 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled
I don't really think is too bad TBH

Re: Site Slow
Hi Joshua,
to explain further:
you must have got it at a good time, I'm getting comments that "couldn't get on for an hour" "just times out" or the pages change but 15 - 20 seconds..its evidenced by a lot of double posts now showing in different threads.
in talking to my host, they have said that i am using far more CPU than they allow and have throttled me back. its been that way for a while, but because I've been complaining its now on their radar.
the host has some FAQ and the story about the phpBB script causing issues, all to do with redundant firefox script???? comes from there as a way to reduce the load on your server by modifying 6 files
http://www.phpbbdoctor.com/modsteps.php?m=78&l=1
they claim this may solve the problem or i need to disable some addons on the site
I dont feel the site is big enough to be having these load issues? but even now mid Monday morning its showing 12% CPU usage with 20 users (4 registered and 16 guests) and the graph for usage over 24 hours is off the top
this was at 11.51 AM today
Generation Time: 34.9493s (PHP: 11% SQL: 89%) - Memory: 6.96 MB
SQL queries: 24 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled - Extra Debug On
12.00ish
Generation Time: 27.5078s (PHP: 28% SQL: 72%) - Memory: 7.13 MB
SQL queries: 28 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled - Extra Debug On
thanks for your comments Joshua, hope you can help

Re: Site Slow
Well I would start making a backup and then remove those edits mentioned, see what happens, if it does not help ..put back the backed up 6 files
Sounds reasonable to me anyway

Re: Site Slow
ok will do, I'll post back to let you know if it makes any difference.
But I'm confused as to why its only me having the problem. shouldn't all sites be affected the same?

Re: Site Slow
OK, had a play, some of the files are there as described, some of the suggestions just don't make sense but did my best and as expected crashed the site after a few changes. had copies of all the files so back up pretty quick.
but one thing for sure...look at the CPU usage.... died (cause I crashed the site) moment she's up again...straight over the allowance????
any thoughts as to whats winding us up?
can show some logs if you are interested?

Re: Site Slow
I entered myself as a guest (Mozilla from Greece - Athens) before 10 minutes from now as a guest in the forum and I had this
Generation Time: 0.612s (PHP: 80% SQL: 20%)
SQL queries: 16 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled
Now the Forum page not even open forum and I takes ' Connection Timeout'.
or
Generation Time: 85.3067s (PHP: 5% SQL: 95%)
SQL queries: 13 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled
At the same time the pages Register
I've had this
Generation Time: 24.2968s (PHP: 21% SQL: 79%)
SQL queries: 9 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled
and the page Log in
I've had this
Generation Time: 22.2265s (PHP: 17% SQL: 83%)
SQL queries: 8 - Debug On - GZIP Enabled
Yes something is wrong, especially when you go to the forum pages.
Like making a full buckup all the server and is loaded
I'm no expert. but I saw that you Post is100 per page and 30 topic per page.
They are more well to change it..
Post 15-20 per page max
15-20 topic max per page
have you upgraded to ICY2;
if you do it you will see a big difference.

Re: Site Slow
Thanks for the suggestions Costa... have made the changes but cant see anything immediately, does it take time to reconfigure?
I'm no guru on this and only just make do with my PC skills and understandings of how it all works
I have considered upgrading to V2, but I'm concerned that I wont get it up and running or i will loose all the data and end up starting from scratch again.... its a free site and I dont know why I worry, but starting again might kill the site.
Surely I cant be alone with this problem when it appears to be a common thing in phpBB.
any thoughts as to whether I can get V2 up and running on a different subdomain parallel to a poor V1.3.0.53 and copy some of the files over?
I may have botched changing the scrip yesterday, will have another play later

Re: Site Slow
I've played a bit with your site today... Since slowdowns appears to be random, I believe that the problem is your server configuration and not really Icy Phoenix.
Can you perform this test?
- Install a clean copy of Icy Phoenix
- Install a clean copy of phpBB
- Try to load some pages randomly during the day... and let me know if even phpBB is slow in loading

Re: Site Slow
Zag,
You haven't mentioned Db Maintenance.
Back your DB up - -
Lock your site!
In the ACP find Db Maintenance
And run only what is obvious to you as to what it is gong to do. As from memory, the last two options you should avoid.
Some will take time - but I've seen this problem where the db is trying to load things that are missing and will keep trying to load them until it times out.
That should hopefully remove or clean out all the useless queries that do nothing.
Then go to cPanel/phpMyAdmin and run optimise on all of the DB - Don't use the one in Icy Phoenix.
And see what happens.

Re: Site Slow
Just an update:
with the help of my son who is a bit better on the script I was able to implement most of the suggested script mods detailed above by the phpBB doctor site. they were mainly about Mozilla as detailed. but it hasn't made any difference.
I dont think I mentioned that the site has been running fine for 9 months, with page load speeds that havent bothered anyone, but the host has been whinging about excessive CPU usage. so I will throw up another clean version of IP to see how I go Luca.
Hi Mort, that sounds like good advice, will do that today and report back.
thanks again

Re: Site Slow
Ok heres another update so far:
followed your advice Mort and cleaned the database and optimised... site when you get on is now quicker than before, but still hard to get onto.
CPU usage is still through the roof
disabled signatures, reduced avatar sizes.
So nothing has really helped yet... site all over the place, sometimes cant get on and just times out, sometimes pages load slowly and sometimes its a rocket.
haven't had the time to sit and load another IP and phpBB program on yet.
Can I systematically shut down some of the add ins in IP, as in I've taken the chat room off the screen but have i shut it down?..just looking to see if I can isolate the part of the program causing the CPU issues.
any other suggestions welcome

Re: Site Slow
You haven't said who your host is?
And if you're paying - How much a month?
Icy Phoenix has moved three times because of poorly resourced ISP's, so have I and so have a lot of others.
Read this and test it at different times over a period etc, and post any bad results here - then we'll go on from there.

But please answer the bold questions, because it will be useful.
