Icy Phoenix

Hi all,
as you may notice this site has been upgraded, to the latest release of Icy Phoenix.

As you may notice, a big part of the code has been rewritten, especially the template system has been renewed and optimized.

The job isn't finished yet, but I can say that most of the things I wanted to change have been changed.

I just need to rewrite a couple of "big things" (errors handling and forums options), then we can start with the debugging phase (fixing bugs and writing docs) and finally we can release the new version (not before March 2009).

As usual, if you notice errors while surfing this site, please contact me.

That is the price to pay for progress...

But consider also the pros in this... you have the opportunity to learn something new and improve things.

Also with the new version you may be able also to adapt some phpBB 3 mods with small changes to the core code.

But... If I can't use medal mod the users in my forum will kill me, I'm sure!!!!

PS: If such a great changes are made, why not IP2, instead of IP 1.2?

I won't be hard in the sense that you do not need to be a professional PHP coder... but it is required a basic knowledge of PHP, HTML, CSS and Icy Phoenix.

Most of the changes applied to Icy Phoenix are due to phpBB 3 porting: Icy Phoenix is now more phpBB 3 than phpBB 2.

For example, language system works the same, template system even if a bit different from phpBB 3 is even more powerful under certain circumstances, sessions are almost the same, posts and privmsgs text are now integrated into posts and privmsgs tables (just like phpBB 3), paths are defined as constants like the next phpBB 3.2. What is still different is forum structure and permissions system, and the lack of classes for everything (even if some of them have been created for Icy Phoenix as well). In a nutshell Icy Phoenix is trying to take all the new positives things which are in phpBB 3 even if a complete porting won't be done.

What does it mean? It means that the core code is looking more similar to phpBB 3 than phpBB 2, and standard phpBB 2 and phpBB 3 mods won't work in Icy Phoenix, but with few edits they may be adapted. I'll provide docs and examples when the final version will be out.

The final versioning number will depend on some extra changes I still have to do. Of course if I'll be able to apply all changes in my "To Do List", then we will have Icy Phoenix 2.0.

I agree, no shoutbox on index is a real pain, but I hope/guess this feature will be added in near future. BTW, talking about MODs, it's a real pain too that MODs like the Medal MOD won't work on the new coded IP version. Hope someone will update this great MOD (I remember Lopalong said something like these some time ago)...

Aside of this, fortunately we can switch the templates to the older ones, because I don't like the phpBB3 style ones and I've been working for a long time on my future Icy style based on the classic Icy one. Hope that work won't be in vain! And by the way, will the changes applied to the template system power/help the classic ones or only the phpBB3 ones?

Another topic worth to comment is about the possibility to turn back to phpBB2 via script. I've got one that "cleans" Icy to phpBB2, will this kind of scripts keep working OK on the new IP version?

Finally, getting back to phpBB 2 will be a bit tough... but it will be easier to convert to phpBB 3. Anyway I hope to provide a script for doing the conversion when the final release will be out.

That would be great. Anyway, the main question is yet on the air, if we keep an eye to what you're telling, IP would become a sort of phpBB2 and phpBB3 hybrid or something like that, isn't it?

I opened a topic for it some time ago here.

I have upgraded this site again...

In this new version Statistics have been deeply modified and Site History has been removed (old Site History statistics are now coded as modules for the Statistics section).

Also the forums management system has been slightly edited (I will change something else before final release) and new forums options have been added.

Some I've done, and that includes the Medal Mod, though I'm not quite sure if they are going to work with the very last version prior to release, but if they don't they should only need touching up!

We are not phpbb3 we are using some code similar to phpbb3 and it will be easier to move to phpbb3 if you want

I have upgraded this site to the latest development release.
