There should be a Set as Avatar link at the bottom of the pic thumbnail details. Note that the link only appears in category view and not in the recent, etc blocks.

It only appears under user's own pics and must be set in ACP to allow this.

um i am looking at the CP for the gallery and i cant seem to find it
sry i found it in the personal gallery part of the CP
Allow users to use own posted images in Album as Avatar Yes No
but does this only work 4 pics that you add in the personal gallery
does it work 4 all pics that anyone has added in the public part of the gallery
by the way um
how do you make your own personal gallery?
i dont get where i need to go to make it
some of my forum members want it,
i think i got it but when i visit my personal gallery i get a error message that says

I'm pretty sure that the set avatar link should appear under users pic in any category.
