If I wanted to change the welcome message, registration message, group join message and other automated messages where would I go to edit these files and is there a area where to go for variables I can use in the messages to call in people's usernames and profile information?

That e-mails text is in the *.tpl files.

Just edit lang files

for changing "messages"
