Easy way
This was harder than i think

First i want made some explenations :
Tabs - i tryed to create tabs with <sripts> .js or similar thing ..but affter few hours i leaved all and stared to create only with simple html and css.. (almost all MG alredy made)
reason i chosed this is simple : sometimes this tabs with .js or <scripts> are a bit slow , also here on mg_winter sometimes i get "not rounded" tabs or i see different colors ... thats all lets start

now see this two pics :
First one is on icyphoenix style without CMS ADV ....

tabs1

and second is on different template (Chaotic site) with CMS ADV

tabs2

as you can see tabs are on banner image ...and thrue tabs you can see background .... and they are rounded

download attachment (there are only few pics inside) unpack it and upload in your templatesmg_themesimagesice overtiere existing pics if ask

open your templatesmg_themesstyle_ice.css

Very good work! I really like it, and will incorporate it into a few of my themes. Very, very nice.

One should note that you can alter the colors to match that of your theme......

As far as answering your questions, that would be a hover issue, I can play with it and let you know, once I get the code onto my test forum!

The great .css editor, Limun!

Post subject: Re: Creating Simple Transparent Tabs In IP
If it's any use to you, These MUST be in this order for whatever purpose you use them for.

a:link {color: #FF0000} /* unvisited link */
a:visited {color: #00FF00} /* visited link */
a:hover {color: #FF00FF} /* mouse over link */
a:active {color: #0000FF} /* selected link */

These below are useless markup and have no effect, as you don't have anything to qualify them in the .css changes you propose.

<li id="home
<li id="forum
<li id="new_posts

etc,
etc,
etc.

All you've done is add images to the a: anchors in much the same way as the "Sparkle" .css works in the background.

What you could do is examine phpBB3 markup and .css and see how it's done, because it's not quite as simple as what you propose - particularly if you are trying to achieve the same results as phpBB3 nav bar using three images that don't actually "Lock Up" but change with each mouse gesture.

I have a question:

Are you trying to get the "Yellow" tabs to show you where you are - rather than where you've been?

Because "Visited" images will keep the tabs yellow until you clear your browser history.

Note to Limun:

Unless I did something wrong, the tab png images only work in IE.

I use Firefox more, but just wanted to check.

Also, look at MG Autumn. There are also some changes needed in the common.css and grey.css.

Are you talking about MG Autumn or MG Winter?

MG Winter has the tabs.

Post subject: Re: Creating Simple Transparent Tabs In IP
No, the old template style "MG Autumn". A lot of people don't have that one installed.

No matter. There is a problem with more than one template due to a spacing issue.

It probably only occurs if you have your monitor resolution set to: 1027x768

There is just a slight clearance problem in the header height. I can increase it which would be easier than reducing the size of the tab pngs.

Here's what I'm getting. I can see a interference overall height problem, and my login logout tab set wraps around to the bottom......

LOGGED IN:

tab_width_issue

LOGGED OUT:

tab_width_issue2

See, when logged in, the above mentioned tab "wraps" around to the bottom!

There's nothing wrong with the code changes you provided, Limun, just a small sizing issue!

Chaotic [ Thu 18 Dec, 2008 21:21 ]
Post subject: Re: Creating Simple Transparent Tabs In IP
I see now!

I think if I ever ran into that problem, I'd remove the Search and FAQ tabs. It's what I did on my site because they aren't really cool enough to be tabs. I just left the links to Search and FAQ in my menu.

You gotta be cool to be a tab!

also what you can do is that you strech pictures a little
made them with less width

second options is that you can remove menu_sep from tabs (a little image before text)

Post subject: Re: Creating Simple Transparent Tabs In IP
Maybe there's another way. See how the overall height drops just slightly when logged in?

You have to look close. I need to increase the height, but keep it that height when logged in.

You can go to my test site and log in and see what I'm talking about.

I tried to decrease the size of the tabs, but then the .css needs changing to match.

If you change one thing it might be easy, is the height, but also keep the height from dropping when logging in.

note: look at other MG templates, without images, they are square tabs, but size is perfect!

Ok, that would probably work. It's going to have to be smaller than 90 pix.

Do me a favor, and look at the xmas styles on my test site, they look perfect with no images, and each .css could be edited to change the link and hover colors!

Nice!

If size didn't drop, I would then say that the whole thing is now perfect! I'm not sure how to make height stay the same in .css

I just checked it. I have that line exactly. You have to be switched to see that line when on Icy Phoenix I guess. Or maybe I need to clear out my cache. I just opened my overall_header.tpl, and that's the coding on the first line......I still need to set the .css in all other templates, but will use matching or better suited pngs for all different templates!!

Thanks.

no , ..yellow tabs are default ( like oranges on this site )
blue - mauseover
white - (active) where you are, based on forum.php , index.php search.php ecc.... ( i m working to set them also if you are example in view topic )
more white lighter - mauseover for for white

Oh, I didn't tell you but for each template, I'm using slightly different color tabs.....you know I had to change the size to 85 pix, so I am making slightly different colors for each template to blend in.

The stock colors you provided work perfectly with Icy Phoenix, MG Autumn (old).

Now, you have inspired me to create for mx (pearl) templates, and for Aphrodite!!!!

Great job.

update to Limun. On my test site, I did mess with the colors of the tabs, the tab color for the current page is wrong. I did that on purpose. I did have the right color scheme for my main site, however, and it works beautiful. The page you are on, is the active tab which is a light color to let you know the current page. Great work.

Totally uncalled for.

This theme

http://www.macommunity.net/

Excluding the "new" Nav .css etc is a rip-off of this theme:

http://www.icythemes.com/ip/index.php?&s=47

Or this code here:

http://icythemes.com/ip/reducing-themes-to-80-vp136.html#p136

While it may be fine to use either for your own personal purpose, It's a different ball game when you create / distribute or advertise a theme based on someone else's work, and give credit only to yourself.

The crux of the matter is:

If you can't acknowledge your source, don't expect any help from those who effect the script changes in the first place.

Chaotic [ Sun 21 Dec, 2008 13:11 ]
Post subject: Re: Creating Simple Transparent Tabs In IP
I don't think you are aiming that at the right person.

The theme I started out with was Icy Phoenix. I then reduced the size using code you shared on your site, but made a few little tweaks on my end. Limun was very instrumental in helping me to perfect the reducing to suit my needs. Limun created a ton of images for use on the site, not to mention a lot of work in .css.

I didn't really see: http://icythemes.com/ip/reducing-themes-to-80-vp136.html#p136 as a theme, but a cosmetic change to any theme available to use with Icy Phoenix. It's even listed as a cosmetic change and a work-in-progress on Icy Themes. It works with a lot of themes, but a few specific things have to be changed to get it to work correctly. I have a ton of different MODS on my site and reducing the theme created so many conflicts. Luckily Limun and I were able to iron out the mess.

Since this really isn't a theme or a theme available for download, I would be more than happy to make my footer:

Design by Mighty Gorgon & Limun
Theme reduced by Lopalong

What says the Thunder Down Under?

Post subject: Re: Creating Simple Transparent Tabs In IP
I actually think this issue is not related to the topic, which was transparent tabs.

While I see the point made by Lopalong, I feel that the last two replies don't have anything to do with Limun's adaptation of a transparent tab menu idea.

Not mean to make anyone mad, just looking at things logically.

Speaking of which, go check out my main site. I have tabs on all xmas themes, (color of tabs blend with template), and then check out my tab treatment (credit to Limun), on my test site on black pearl!

The pearl overall header is a "bl" template.

A note to Limun;

Hey, bud, I found out that you can have your "cake" (the original overall_header.tpl....old header link configuration), and the new transparent button style both at the same time, in the same theme folder! (on same theme different style).

(so far this only applies to the overall_header.bl.tpl)

Weeeeee..........just check out my new GT Matte theme, then switch back to like Blue Pearl.....you'll see what I mean:

http://www.portal.thegtsaga.net/main/index.php

I did find it very difficult to apply this neat .css trick to ca_aphrodite, though. That one I didn't finish.

Thanks, a million for all your help with these tabs!

Lopalong [ Wed 24 Dec, 2008 10:57 ]
Post subject: Re: Creating Simple Transparent Tabs In IP
Firstly it's not "Off-Topic" because the screen shots and the URL in this thread contains the reason for the diversion.

Nowhere on icyphoenix.com or icythemes.com will you find a theme that doesn't credit the original author for their contribution where it is due.

The "Golden Rule" is: If one cannot put their own "copyright" on a theme, or make enough drastic changes to the original; then one didn't create it, all they've done is modify it using other people's examples or script.

Such is the case you will find at http://icythemes.com/ip-demo/ where themes are "modified by" rather than "style by"

Whether ice-80 is, or has not been released is a debatable point, as it states it's under test or evaluation for all of the template changes.

There have been no requests for it, neither has there been any feedback on the code changes as to it's suitability for any particular style.

And while I have no objection to individuals (Webmasters) using the "Cosmetic" changes for their own individual sites, I do object to the code being used by another "Theme" maker as indicated in your footer.

Please add: "based on ip-80 - Modified by Limun and Chaotic" or something similar in the footer, with a link back to icythemes.com, particularly if you ever want support - else don't use the script changes.

And any additional changes / feedback from the original script posted at icythemes.com would have been appreciated, and not something that was just taken and used as the base for something else without any consideration for supporting the original code in the first place.

Mighty Gorgon [ Wed 24 Dec, 2008 11:43 ]
Post subject: Re: Creating Simple Transparent Tabs In IP
I would like just to mention that just a width adjustment (and I'm not telling this is the case... which is a different thing) couldn't be considered a "credit due" variation.

I don't know which changes have been applied to that template, but if it is just a WIDTH adjustment you cannot ask to be credited.

I repeat, I don't know if this is the specific case, we need to wait the "responsible author(s)" for clarifying that. And I think that if you want to be credited for that "Cosmetic Change" you will need to add a disclaimer in your topic, which I don't see in your topic. Or at least add an extra modification in overall_footer.tpl to add your credits.

P.S.: Please, just remember that I'm not "native" English, if you think that this post can be offensive in any way, I didn't mean to.

Lopalong [ Wed 24 Dec, 2008 13:09 ]
Post subject: Re: Creating Simple Transparent Tabs In IP
No offence taken.

But it is more than just a simple width change, as it involves many .tpl files along with core (.php) files. Which has been used for the overall conversion to reduce the width of the theme involved; or any theme for that matter.

What I do find extremely annoying is that those changes were apparently used and further modified for a particular theme, WITHOUT those changes being made available in the spirit of which they were obtained.

Anyway, No offence meant, but I'm tired of feeding the monkey's.

I do this for a hobby for absolutely no return, and my ego is not big enough to continue doing something for others that need to be reminded that they have an obligation to release under the GPL, the changes they make to other peoples contributions.

icythemes.com is dying from the lack of any support or feedback where one would expect some reverse contribution, rather than vultures who just take whatever is available for their own purpose - And this is just another one of those occasions, and begs the question:

What the hell do I bother for?

You do show a certain tact...or elegance to your posts, Lopalong.

Tactful posts require tactful responses.

I don't believe we will be listing all the tweaks and enhancements we used as I'd like the site to look different than others. If user's want a style to look like ip-80, they can use the code as is posted on your site and it will work for them. There is nothing more boring than viewing other Icy Phoenix sites that use the same exact template and have the exact same graphics. It makes me want to rip my fingernails off one by one.

By the way, I added "based on ip-80 - Modified by Limun and Chaotic" to my footer.

In the future, please don't be so quick to snap on other people. No one growled at you or snarled back at you.

Regardless, I still love you and Merry Christmas!
