I have the same problem, in my opinion the problem is the fact that we have only 16 MB reserved for PHP elabourations....
Tried different tipes of compression rates.
The problem is resolved if I resize the picture (at a lower resolution than 1280..I don't remember exactly) ....But Users can't resize a picture every time they need to upload one.
Please note that the size limits arent arent a problem: I choosed 3000 X 3000 as a size limit.
I think that it takes more than 16 MB of memoy creating a thumbnail for a big picure....
I know that there is a way to increase that value at 17 MB or more....
Sorry I forgot to tell that when I upload a big picture, the page goes copetely blank, but if I choose not to use thumbnail cache the picture uploads just fine.
And again, If I select "manual thumbnail" and I choose another (little) picture it works
