So I'm wanting to take a stab at this task, likely by integrating another mod to do it.. but want to see if there's been any work on something similar.

- option to upload a larger version of the same photo via a button in the upload form to an offsite image hoster like photobucket, postimage or flicker
- in turn, this will create a link under the image in the gallery called "view larger size", and also include the direct URL to link to it on the forum.

This is basically to keep storage down, while allowing the viewer to inspect a photo closer or download for print (photography forum)

However I'm unsure how to not show the "view larger size" link, if they have not uploaded it.

Anyone else interested in something like this?

I guess you can use BBCodes in description tag. If not enabled (I can't remember) you can easily switch them on...
