i really wish to display my members personal albums using columns.

What you mention here would be a nice change to the album - and the zeldaelements site has created an album layout similar to what I had been planning for my own site...

My approach would be to leave album_personal_index.php as it is, but create a new page (e.g. gallery.php) to go with a different template layout page, with the bare minimum code for accessing a single pic from each users gallery.

There are some questions to raise about adding a feature like this, from a functional point of view. Chiefly, what is the criteria for selecting a single picture from several in a users album? In the ideal case, the user chould be able to set their gallery thumbnail, rather than say, just selecting the latest image.
Then there is the question of the layout - one could just create a fixed 3 column based file, but if we wanted to be completely cms, then we'd need extra options in the ACP to configure a gallery page number of columns.. so theres some things to consider...

Anyway.. I'll post here my own files at some point...
