Post Solved. (sort Of) I Really Broke It Now!

Thinking about this further, I decided to contact MG privately, since this might be a security issue.

Ok, I've done it twice more now, and this time from within the ACP, so I guess it's not a security issue. I'm not sure what the heck is happening, but each time, following a submission of data, something is corrupted somewhere. The second time it was while creating another group. The third time it was setting group permissions.  When it happens, all that will return is a blank page. Viewing the source produces:

</HEAD><BODY></BODY></HTML>

I thought it might be something weird with Firefox 1.0, so I switched to IE 6, which is what I was using this last time.

I was wrong in guessing a corrupted database. This time I backed up the database after the crash, restored the files, deleted and re-created the DB, ran setup.php and then restored the original database files. So it must be something corrupting a file somewhere, but given this is 3 times in 2 days, I would have thought someone else would have run into this already if it was a bug!

Any suggestions?

Ok, I've tracked down the problem. I had turned on "Add TPL Filenames in HTML" option in the templates settings. This causes the line

<!-- template .//includes/cache_tpls/def_tree_def.tpl start -->/***************************************************************************

to be added to def_tree.php in the Includes directory every time I posted a new message. This in turn tripped Cracker Tracker into somehow thinking there was a worm attacking the system, and shutting things down.

So, temporary fix is to not turn on "Add TPL Filenames in HTML". I'll leave it to the real coders to figure out how to fix this properly!
