I'm currently running phpBB 2.0.17 with Smartors Photo Album mod installed.

I would like to upgrade my forum to latest Icy Phoenix but problem is that I dont know how to
install it without loosing all images on my current photo albums public and private galleries.

I did quick test instal with my test board to find out what happens to galleries if I just follow "upgrade From phpBB" instructions.
First I updated my forum to phpBB 2.0.22 and after that I followed the instructions. Result was errors with album related
database tables after launcing the update_to_ip.php in my forums root folder and album categories were also missing when viewing the album after installation.
Rest of Icy Phoenix worked ok. Users and topics etc. were all there.

So, after the test I was wonderin do I have to update smartor photo album to FAP before upgradin to Icy Phoenix or
is there any other solution to work with.

You did right in following upgrading from phpBB instructions.

What you have to do once you have upgraded is:

• Re-run FAP install and run also PG migrate.
  
• Edit includes/constants.php and adjust your album files path... or move the images into files folder. Just take a look at Icy Phoenix files structure and you will understand immediately.
