i have 1 request if you 're able to help me out.   As you know Identity theft has increase, I would like to hide Birth date in profile and keep the Age in viewtopic.  with this way, more users feel comfortable to participate in Birthday mod.

Don't forget about the memberlist.  The memberlist shows their age and it doesn't take a genius to do the math to find your birth date:



How can you remove this too?

I like to leave it like that on Memberlist and Viewtopic, 'cause it's not a full date of birth.

That birthday stays the same for 12 months and has no indication of the day or month - "Who's Having a Birthday Today" would be pretty easy to work it out from.

Yeah, the calendar and the birthday block would also give it away.

Well, you just listed your birthday and I'm sure your IP Address is recorded here as well as on other websites.  It doesn't take a hacker much to figure the rest out.  You can never ever be too careful.

It's a noble gesture to protect your users from the "Evil" hackers, maybe not necessary, but noble anyway.

As for my birthday - It's never correct, and it's never the same on any forums that I visit.

Probably why I've never considered the Identity theft issue.

It depends how you look at, but i guess both of you are correct.  I am doing this hopefully more users participate and fill in their birthdays even they're not real bithdays.

I cannot view the point of Chaotic. The IP addresses are only visible for admins and mods, so if a hacker is smart enough to find an user's IP which is not visible, he/she should be smart enough to find the user's not visible birthday.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, won't we?

Myself, I see little value in birthdays being published on a public board.  

Private, yes - where it's more like family and friends - Public? Who really cares?

And sometimes it can also work against the Member - Silly "old" twit, or I'll answer that when he / she is over 12 years old.  

I think a lot of the problem comes from older users.  I'm in my twenties, so I was lucky enough to grow up in the internet age.  Think about older users.  They are seeing and hearing tons of commercials on TV and radio about identity theft.  A lot of older computer users are scared and intimidated by the internet.  They've heard of the horror stories, so what makes you think they are going to give a birth date, of all things, on a message board profile?

I think this issue matters depending on your community setting.  I don't think a community with a younger age group would mind their birthdays being shown.

Make what you want out of it, but it's probably better to be safe than sorry.
