This is a pretty random idea, but I've seen it used on many different websites. The idea behind a featured profile on the portal allows other users to meet new members in your community, showcasing the member's entire profile, and also adds a community feel to your website. A lot of the time users will register their member account and never interact with the community on the board. No administrator likes that and it can be seen as a waste of database space. You can brag all day about how many registered members you have, but how many are active in the community you put together? A featured profile is a small leap to remedy that issue.
A random profile block for the portal could include any or all of the following:
- Member avatar
- Member username
- Date joined
- Link to their profile
The featured profile block could be the size of the user block. The featured profile would show a different profile each time the page is visisted.
This is also a chance for your members to learn how to "pimp" their profile and get just a little bit more out of your Icy Phoenix. I doubt many of your users know they can add pictures, audio, videos, etc. to their profile in the Extra Profile Information area. Example:
