Why not upload the install folder as is and not rename it?

You didn't say whether you were currently using .27c or a beta.

Also, do you see a green box at the bottom of the screen when running database_update.php?

So if you were upgrading from beta to RC1, you should upload all new files, including the install folder. You ran install/database_update.php? All the correct CHMOD permissions were applied? Can you provide a screenshot of what you see when trying to run database_update.php?

Thanks

If you use Firefox, you can download an add-on FTP client called FireFTP. I've been using it for years and it never lets me down.

Glad to see you got the file to work.
