How would you ever have a chance in hell of stopping the crap that spammers, scammers and the rest of the low-life's get up to without referencing something like Hot Spam who actually profess to track these mongrels so that one can check email names, DNS and other useful tools?

Kind of makes one wonder if there is anyone on the Internet that isn't a spammer of some description?  

Well to begin with.. I don't think ALL of those are truly bad guys, some of them are just a bit paranoid and just for that reason hide their real IP.

I still do manual checks on my own portals (the IP Spy tool in the portal) using a website to deliver an IP analising popup, if needed I look deeper using google on the extra stuff you mention.
The base of the tool I use is at http://wellho.net/, I even think they show more code than I used as an example somewhere (so you could do your own lookups).. I was just lazy and let them do the lookups ..gave them a nice credit link though.

The best for defeating spammers IMHO is kill them fast, as long as it takes to make them finally realise it's pointless... if they are human, they will

If I can, I try to ban while they are posting... must hurt some times because I sometimes even follow the banned IP in Whois Online list (I even saw one that was searching for his lost spam message and trying  to tog back in again constantly
